1.3 High-Level Architecture

2. Realization of Design Principles

This section details how core design principles were practically implemented in the development of the MDX content management system.

2.1 Modular Architecture

The system achieves modularity by implementing distinct, independent components:

  • Plugin-based Processing Pipeline: Enables extensible and reusable AST transformations.
  • Decoupled Link Resolution: Provides isolated GitHub API communication, enhancing maintainability.
  • Independent Image Service: Offers dedicated image fetching and caching logic.

2.2 Reusability

The system emphasizes reusability through a structured React component architecture:

  • Component-Based React Architecture: Modular and independent UI components (e.g., buttons, forms, navigation bars) can be easily reused across multiple parts of the CMS, significantly enhancing maintainability, consistency, and development speed.

  • Shared Component Registry (ReactComponents.tsx): Centralized management of reusable components ensures simplified component updates and streamlined integration across the application.

2.3 Performance Optimization

The following strategies optimize system performance, ensuring efficient and responsive operation:

  • Debounced Processing: Limits frequent updates with a 300ms delay.

  • AST Memoization: Caches AST results based on content hashing to avoid redundant computations.

  • Selective Updates: Processes only content that has changed, specifically detecting link modifications.

  • Parallel Execution: Executes independent tasks concurrently with Promise.all.

4. Core Implementation

4.1 MDX Processing System

4.1.1 AST Processing Pipeline

Implementation (editor.tsx):

// This version is simplified for documentation:

const generateAST = (markdown: string) =>
fromMarkdown(markdown, {
extensions: [mdxJsx({ acorn, addResult: true })],
mdastExtensions: [mdxJsxFromMarkdown()]
});

tree.children.forEach(node => {
if (node.type === "mdxJsxFlowElement") {
// Component validation
if (!scope[node.name]) {
scope[node.name] = () => <NotFoundComponent name={node.name} />;
}

}
});

const RenderedAst = ({ content }) => {
const ast = generateAST(content);
return <MdxPreview ast={ast} />;
};

Key Functions:

  • generateAST(): Converts MDX to tree structure using mdast utilities
  • sanitizeAttributes(): Cleans component props to prevent script injection
  • MdxPreview: Renders AST with React hydration

example:

Count: 0

4.2 Intelligent Linking System

Implementation (modifyLinksPlugin.js):

// This version is simplified for documentation:
const repo = "niravbhuva99/cms-thesis-project";
const path = "docs";
const prod_URL = "https://celebrated-maamoul-edd9d7.netlify.app/";

const extractFileNameAndAnchor = (url) => {
const [filename, anchor] = url.split("#");
return {
filename: filename.replace(/\\.mdx$/, ""),
anchorPart: anchor || "",
};
};

export const processLink = async (node) => {
if (node.type !== "link") return;

const { filename, anchorPart } = extractFileNameAndAnchor(node.url);
const query = `repo:${repo} filename:${filename} path:${path} extension:mdx`;

try {
const res = await fetch(`https://api.github.com/search/code?q=${query}`, {
headers: {
Authorization: `Bearer ${process.env.REACT_APP_GITHUB_TOKEN}`,
Accept: "application/vnd.github+json",
},
});

const data = await res.json();
const filePath = data?.items?.[0]?.path?.replace(/\\.mdx$/, "") || filename;

node.url = `${prod_URL}${filePath}${anchorPart ? "#" + anchorPart : ""}`;
} catch (err) {
console.warn("Link fallback used:", err);
node.url = `${prod_URL}${filename}${anchorPart ? "#" + anchorPart : ""}`;
}
};

const modifyLinksPlugin = () => {
return async (tree) => {
await processLink(tree);
};
};

export default modifyLinksPlugin;

Key Features:

  • Link Classification: Identifies 5 link types using regex patterns
  • Anchor Preservation: Maintains #section links during resolution
  • Error Resilience: Fallback URLs maintain content integrity
  • Rate Limit Handling: Respects GitHub's 5000 req/hour limit

example:

Absolute: /docs/thesis/intro.mdx
link
Parent Folder : ../techical/editor.mdx Image Example

4.3 Image Handling System

4.3.1 Image Processing Workflow

Implementation:

// This version is simplified for documentation:
const fetchImage = async (img, setSrc) => {
try {
// Resolve relative path and fetch image from GitHub
const url = resolveImagePath(img);
const response = await fetch(url, {
headers: {
Authorization: `token ${process.env.REACT_APP_GITHUB_TOKEN}`,
Accept: "application/vnd.github.v3+json",
},
});

const { content } = await response.json();
const buffer = Buffer.from(content, "base64");
const blob = new Blob([buffer], { type: detectMimeType(img) });
setSrc(URL.createObjectURL(blob));
} catch (error) {
if (error.status === 404) {
setSrc(`/placeholder.svg?text=${encodeURIComponent(img)}`);
} else {
await fetchWithRetry(img, setSrc);
}
}
};

5. Security Implementation

5.1 Security Measures

5.2 Token Management

  • Stored in Netlify environment variables
  • Limited to read:packages scope
  • Rotated quarterly via GitHub Actions
  • Never exposed in client bundles

6. Testing Strategy

6.1 Testing Pyramid

6.2 Sample Test Case

// Link resolution test
test("Resolves relative links to absolute paths", async () => {
const node = {
type: "link",
url: "../intro.mdx",
};

await processLink(node);

expect(node.url).toBe(
"https://github.com/user/repo/blob/main/docs/intro.mdx"
);
});

7. Deployment Architecture
